When word started to circulate late Saturday afternoon that Ken Shamrock would not be allowed to fight Kimbo Slice, myself and plenty of friends were disappointed. Sure, it wasn't going to a fight between two greats - it was all about hype.
The hype of Kimbo Slice, this wild beast that was the creation of a marketing wizard against the MMA legend who was looking for one more time in the spotlight to capture glory.
Later on in the day, when it was announced that Seth Petruzelli would face Kimbo, here is what I texted to friends: "Seth will win - EXC is ruined".
That is exactly what happened.
That is what happens when you put all of your hopes on a street fighter rather than an MMA fighter.
Petruzelli is not the best fighter in the world by any stretch. The guy is only 2-2 in his last four fights which have been scattered since 2004. He even took a year off to start a Smoothie King business.
But even I knew he had enough skill to slay the bearded wonder. It took 12 punches in 14 seconds for EliteXC's cash machine to circle the drain.
For someone that was supposed to be this tough, rugged man's man who would take on "anyone, anywhere, anytime", he didn't even put up a fight. You could see in his eyes when the two men squared off against each other in the center of the cage that Kimbo knew he was done for. He tried to put up a good front, staring a whole though his opponent. But Petruzelli would have none of it and simply laughed with his happy-go-lucky demeanor.
He was in a no-lose situation and came out the big winner by smacking Kimbo around like your average playground bully.
Now, Kimbo has absolutely no where to go. He has been exposed for what he was - a man with a hyped up story that was all fiction. He wasn't a great fighter - he was just a backyard thug.
MMA hardcore fans are rejoicing today that Kimbo's 15 minutes of fame are over.
Meanwhile, EliteXC is drowning in misery, knowing that their golden egg has cracked.
