By Katie Strang/Newsday Phillipe Nover's life has always been a balancing act. He grew up in Canarsie, but spent summers in The Philippines, his mother's native country. After getting into scuffles when he was younger, he appeased his parents by taking self-defense classes, but when his interest progressed, he was forced to sneak out of the house to attend his mixed martial arts matches to avoid upsetting his mother. Kimbo KO'd on CBS

It took years for the legend of Kimbo Slice to rise and just 14 seconds for it to crumble.

Slice was defeated for the first time in an MMA fight by last-minute sub Seth (The Silverback) Petruzelli. Petruzelli caught slice coming in with a short, chopping punch and Kimbo fell face first to the mat.

Petruzelli, who was supposed to fight on the undercard, was given the opportunity to fight in the main event after MMA legend Ken Shamrock was deemed unable to fight by the Florida State Athletic Commission. Shamrock sustrained a cut above the eye while, oddly,  training the night before the fight.

Petruzelli, a former UFC fighter, had won 8 of his last 10 fights. And those bouts were mostly against quality UFC competition. The 44-year-old Shamrock, however, was 1-8 over his last nine fights. He was viewed as more a sacrificial lamb and a high-profile name that Slice could add to his growing MMA reputation.

That reputation took a huge hit tonight on CBS' ExliteXC program. While many MMA insiders scoffed at Slice's inexperience and limited ground game, it was hard to ignore the brazen, brawling streetfighter whose underground fights were an internet sensation.

But Petruzelli wasted little time in the fight. With his back to the cage, Petruzelli countered Kimbo with a short right hand. The blow was enough to drop Slice and open a nasty cut above his left eye. Slice was dazed and never fully recovered. Petruzelli seized the moment and pounded Slice until the referee stopped it.

"He didn't train for me, I didn't train for him. That's what happens," Petruzelli said during an on-camera interview with CBS immediately after the fight.

It was reported on the telecast the Slice didn't agree to the fight until about 20 minutes before air time. It was a huge risk, taking on an opponent that he knew virtually nothing about.

Slice was clearly the franchise for CBS, which built it's cards around the underground mystique surrounding the fighter. It remains to be seen what happens to CBS's commitment to MMA as well as the career of Slice.

The fallen fighter was gracious in defeat, shaking hands with Petruzelli and saying, "It's all good." He then invited everyone back to his after party at a nearby nightclub.

I'm going to this fight...I can't wait...

If Shamrock wins then Kimbo is done. All those people that said he hasn't beaten a real competitor will be right and losing to someone that is this old-skool will ruin Kimbo.

If Kimbo wins, people will still say he hasn't beaten anyone other than has-beens.

Kimbo needs to win this fight and his next fight needs to be against a top competitor to prove he is the real deal.

Kimbo showed zero class when he wouldnt touch gloves w/ Petruzelli before the bout. FYI,any quality UFC fighter (and most are quality, or they end up on EliteXC) will kill him. Maybe you and your posse of monkeys who were jumping up and down before the fight can sell all your gold teeth for rent money now smilies/grin.gif
