UFC: Silva vs. Irwin aired July 19th on Spike TV. On that fight card aired Hermes Franka Vs Frankie Edgar. I spoke with Frankie after his win. Here is what he said, “The fight went really well. I dominated all 3 rounds executed a game plan and it worked pretty well for me. I knew he was dangerous for the fact he is a heavy hitter and really crafty on the ground. I knew I was going to have to smart fight and just avoid some of those things. Frankie says he is, “A little banged up. There was a pretty big knee at the end of the round. Blasted me in the nose but I’m good. It’s a little stuffed up.”
I asked Frankie where he trains,”I train at Ricardo Almeida Jiu Jitsu in Hamilton, N.J.” The website is http://www.ricardoalmeida.com/. He also tells me who else he surrounds himself with for support, “I am managed by Dean Albright. My boxing coach is Mark Henry. My wresting coach Steve has been with me since I was a little kid. My family and stuff like that – my wife.”
When I questioned Frankie as to what his goals are for his UFC career he answered, “I want to be the best. I had a setback in my last fight and I know I’ve got a lot to prove still and improving as well. But I eventually want a World Championship.”
Frankie also told me, “Me and my wife just got married this past April she’s actually pregnant and so we are expecting our first kid January, February something like that.”
I told Frankie I had questioned him after his fight at UFC 68 in Newark N.J. I explained to him that I had sat next to his dad at the weigh-ins. (I thought he was one of the coolest people I had ever met) When it came Frankie’s turn to weigh in and face off his dad was standing on the chair screaming ,“Frankie! ” The pride in this fathers face was overwhelming it touched my heart and got me to thinking about the pressure a fighter must feel from family members. I asked Frankie how that affected him. He said, “You know it’s been that way since wrestling. He’s always been real supportive and wanting me to get after it. So I’m just used to it. It motivates me.”
Frankie explains, now that the fight is over, “I take about a week off. I usually get right back to it. Being that I’m a little banged up, you know, I’ve still got some stitches from the fight. As soon as I heal I’ll be right back training.”
Frankie says to his fans, “Thanks for all the support. I’ve got a new website coming up so check that out. That’s going to be frankieedgar.com.”
