Florida to sanction MMA as a sport

Tom Molloy, Executive Director of the Florida Athletic Commission, which governs boxing and mixed martial arts, said Friday that amateur mixed martial arts will become fully sanctioned this week.

Molloy spearheaded the effort to add the amendment to the Pugilist law that Gov. Charlie Crist signed off on recently.

This opens the door for amateur shows such as Fort Lauderdale-based Left Hook Productions Warriors Collide series to add ground-and-pound to its striking shows. The amateur division will be headed by Gainesville-based Cory Schafer of ISKA, one of the state's few sanctioned amateur organizations. . . .

Marcus Aurelio, Gleison Tibau Alves and Cole Miller of American Top Team Coconut Creek are scheduled to leave Monday for Las Vegas where they will fight on Saturday night's UFC 86 card at Mandalay Bay. It is one of the few times ATT has had three fighters on a major UFC card. Heading the card is Quinton"Rampage" Jackson against Forrest Griffin, the original "Ultimate Fighter" champion. Jackson won the UFC light heavyweight title more than a year ago.

Since knocking out Chuck Liddell, Jackson has defended his title once. Griffin earned his title shot by submitting Mauricio"Shogun" Hua, who has defeated Jackson earlier in their careers. Jackson and Griffin spent 13 weeks as opposing coaches during The Ultimate Fighter Season 7 that was won by middleweight Amir Sadollah who submitted C.B. Dollaway with an arm bar from the guard in the first round this past weekend at Las Vegas.

Sadollah now joins the ranks of former TUF champions Matt Serra and Griffin. The Jackson-Griffin pay-per-view fight will be shown throughout Broward and Palm Beach including All Stars Sports Bar and Grill, the unofficial headquarters for mixed martial arts. . . .

Jeff Shamrock, nephew of MMA legend Ken Shamrock, signed a multi-fight deal with world championship fight promotion Strikeforce. The 18-year-old's debut with the San Jose-based organization is expected to be this fall. Shamrock is the youngest member of Ken Shamrock's Lion's Den Reno elite fight team.
